Intragastric Ballooning

Intragastric Ballooning

It is a new and innovative weight loss procedure, here a saline-filled silicone balloon is implanted in the patient’s stomach. This procedure helps you lose weight by limiting the food intake. It makes you feel fuller with less quantity of food. This procedure is for anyone who lies in overweight or obese category and want to lose weight. Like the other weight loss procedures, an intragastric balloon requires a long term commitment to a healthier lifestyle to ensure long term success.

How It Works

The intragastric balloon procedure is performed through endoscopy. This is an outpatient technique and the patient will need to be sedated for this procedure. In this procedure, the physician inserts a thin tube (catheter) laden with the intragastric balloon down the patient’s throat into the stomach. And then an endoscope (a flexible tube attached with camera) is placed in the stomach to conduct the procedure of balloon insertion. This procedure takes about half an hour to be completed.

The insertion of intragastric balloon make you feel fuller with less food, which often means that you will eat very less. Another positive change is that the balloon changes the hormone levels that control appetite. After the placement of intragastric balloon in the stomach, you experience an approximate loss of 20% to 30% of the excess weight. Furthermore, the weight you lose also depends on the lifestyle changes. This procedure leads to significant weight loss and also help in resolving the weight related conditions like heart disease, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, Type-II diabetes.
