Dr. Mohit Bhandari of Mohak Bariatrics & Robotics Centre, Indore successfully completed 53 bariatric operations in a marathon 13 hours, thereby entering the World Book of Records. The surgeries were performed on May 1, 2019.

Bariatric surgery which is performed to control obesity is a surgery full of risks and possible complications because most often, the obese patients in addition to obesity suffer from other ailments such as hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnoea, asthma, heart diseases etc. Dr. Mohit Bhandari and his team operated on patients not only from India (Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Jharkhand) but also from Bangladesh & Kenya.

These patients weighed between 100 kg and 182 kg. As per the surgical needs of the respective patient, various types of surgeries namely Banded Gastric Bypass (15), Banded Mini Gastric Bypass (14) Banded Sleeve Gastrectomy (24) were successfully performed. All these operations were broadcast live internationally to other doctors and medical personnel.

He is also the most experienced surgeon to perform more than 12,000 bariatric surgeries as well as over 500 robotic surgeries. He has benefited over 4,500 type-2 diabetic patients with bariatric surgery. He performs all modalities of bariatric surgery such as Sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastric Bypass, Mini Gastric Bypass.

In 2015, Dr Bhandari’s name found place in the LIMCA book of records when he performed 25 bariatric surgeries in 11 hours, performing the feat with the help of a 40-person team. He has also successfully operated on a patient form Mauritius weighing 410 kg. In 2012, Dr. Bhandari performed the 1st documented obesity surgery in India, operating on an Asian woman weighing 350kg; and in 2013 he performed bariatric surgery on a six-year-old obese boy, the youngest person on record to receive such surgery in India. He has been invited to operate in various countries such as Germany, Belgium, China, Australia etc. All these surgeries were also telecast live.

Dr. Bhandari holds a degree in MS, DMAS from France and Advance Postgraduate Diploma in Minimal Access Surgery from the University of Strasbourg. He has won awards from the Indian Medical Association (IMA), the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI).
