Project Condor Marks a New Milestone in Connected Surgery
I am pleased to share a significant milestone in the evolution of tele-robotic surgery and connected surgical care.
At IRCAD India, Project Condor brought together two advanced robotic platforms—the SSI Mantra Surgical Robotic System and the Toumai Surgical Robot by MicroPort MedBot—with operating rooms located kilometres away, demonstrating the possibilities of simultaneous multi-platform tele-robotic surgery.
As part of this milestone, I successfully performed 2 Tele-Robotic Bariatric Surgeries, while Dr. Mahak Bhandari performed 2 Tele-Robotic Hernia Surgeries. One procedure performed by each of us was carried out using SSI Mantra, while the other was performed using Toumai by MicroPort MedBot.
All four procedures were conducted with approximately 30 milliseconds of latency, highlighting the role of advanced robotic technology, high-speed connectivity and coordinated surgical systems in enabling precision across geographical boundaries.
Project Condor stands out because it links two robotic systems at the same time. It also brings two surgeons into the work while running four tele-robotic procedures from one command center.
In practice, this shows what may come next for surgery. Skills, tools, and clinical teamwork can reach beyond the usual operating room.
To me, this is a real step toward understanding how tele-robotic surgery could help build a more connected surgical setup. It could improve access to expert care. It could also help teams work together. That could open doors for complex procedures across cities and beyond national borders.
